Science Talk

Some recent conversations in the Common Household, about Science:

What was learned in Science class at school
Son:  I forgot to mention that in Chemistry I learned Frank’s Law.  PV = nrt.
Oldest Daughter:  That’s Boyle’s Law.
Son:  No, it’s not.  It’s the ideal gas law.  Boyle’s Law is V1P1 = V2P2.
Youngest Daughter:  R2D2?
Youngest Daughter:  Did Boyle boil water?
Son: Probably at some point.  He was British so he probably had to boil water for his tea.

On the way back from Scout summer camp:
Scout 1, to my son:  What merit badges are you going to get at Advancement camp next week?
Son:  Chemistry, Engineering, Composite Materials, Electronics, Robotics, and Nuclear Science.
Scout 1: Hey, you’ll have all the merit badges you need to be able to construct a Weapon of Mass Destruction!
(Me, thinking to myself:  There is a merit badge for Composite Materials?!)
Son:  Maybe the first requirement for the Nuclear Science badge is “Build a particle accelerator.”

I am expecting to hear a large explosion from the general direction of scout Advancement camp.

Mr. T just earned the Composite Materials badge this spring--it's a brand new "high tech" badge. It stunk something fierce, I guess, and he wrecked a pair of pants while doing it. Don't dress your Scout in anything nice for that badge work.

Green Girl, what he wears is beyond my control, because he's earning this badge at camp. But since he will only wear something nice if I threaten him with loss of food privileges for a week, it's unlikely he will be wearing anything that I care about!

It sounds like your son belongs in Eureka --not the California town I'm in, but the one in the Eureka tv show :-)

I am in awe of the sciencey stuff happening there. In my life time I have failed more science classes than most people take. I finally taught myself what an electro-checmical reaction was when I taught my kid to remove silver tarnish with hot water, aluminum foil and baking soda.
